The Importance of an Effective Internal Communication Strategy

Did you know that internal communication is reported as a key success factor for nearly 79% of organizations?

"Company strategies and goals need to be communicated to employees so they can align their personal objectives accordingly.  When employees understand how their own work contributes to achieving overall company goals they are engaged, morale is higher, turnover decreases and productivity increases which has a direct result on the bottom line."
- Stephanie Gillis-Paulgaard

Think about it, if your own employees don’t believe what is written or said about your organization, why should your customers?

There are many benefits to both employees and employers when internal communication is done effectively. But how does an organization deliver and maintain great internal communications?  In short, research its audience. Communication needs to be tailored to the audience (the employees), listen to what they saying, and when a message is being crafted consider the tone and medium that the organization will use to deliver it.

Effective internal communication helps an organization achieve its objectives. It is the critical link that encourages everyone, regardless of position and title, to deliver on his or her responsibilities each and every day they come to work. Communication, when done correctly, builds trust and strengthens relationships.  Communication is the root of all relationships.

So, what does good internal communication look like?

  • Understanding your audience and what appeals to them
  • Two-way dialogue (include face-to-face wherever possible)
  • Clear, jargon-free language
  • Open and objective communication
  • Consistent and regular communication
  • An accessible medium (don't strictly send out email blasts if majority of your workforce doesn't have access to technology)

You probably have a sense of where your organization falls on this topic.  Would you say that your organization's internal communications are effective?

Personally, I have been developing and executing effective internal communication strategies for over 17 years. Take Roots Consulting was created with the belief that internal communication isn't limited to vision and mission statements that appear on a corporate website or wall.  It is written, spoken and non-verbal interaction amongst employees each and every day that ultimately lead to the success or failure of an organization.

Perhaps it's time to revamp your internal communications strategy.  Take Roots offers high level strategic consulting, communication workshops and a variety of other services. To learn more about how Take Roots Consulting can help your organization, please feel free to visit www.takeroots.ca.
