IUCN @IPBES-8

From 14 June to 24 June 2021, an IUCN delegation participated in the 8th Plenary session of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-8).

Highlights of IPBES-8

The 8th session of the IPBES Plenary convened virtually from 14 to 24 June 2021. It was preceded by the IPBES Stakeholder Days from 3 to 9 June 2021, and by regional consultations from 7 to 11 June 2021.

The 8th session of IPBES Plenary focused on the scoping reports of the two assessments that were decided during the 7th session of IPBES Plenary, i.e. the Nexus and the Transformative Change assessments. The Nexus assessment is to examine the interlinkages among the sustainable development goals related to food and water security, health for all, protecting biodiversity on land and in the oceans and combating climate change. The transformative change assessment is to address the underlying causes of biodiversity loss, determinants of transformative change and options for achieving the 2050 vision for biodiversity. The Plenary also considered for approval interim work plans of IPBES task forces for the intersessional period 2021–2022. See agenda here

IUCN supports #IPBES8 Stakeholder Days and the Open-Ended Network of IPBES Stakeholders (ONet)

Thanks to the France-IUCN partnership and through in-kind support to IPBES Secretariat, IUCN was a key contributor to the #IPBES8 Stakeholder Days. IUCN was publicly thanked for its support by IPBES Executive Secretary in the #IPBES8 Stakeholder Days opening session on 3 June. More information on #IPBES8 Stakeholder Days here.

IUCN has also been well engaged in the activities of the Open-Ended Network of IPBES Stakeholders (ONet) for preparing ONet’s opening statement in the opening session of IPBES 8th Plenary.
